What is a healthy body fat percentage range?

There is no single "healthy" body fat number — the American Council on Exercise publishes descriptive category bands instead, with essential fat at 10–13% for women and 2–5% for men, athletes at 14–20% and 6–13%, fitness at 21–24% and 14–17%, average at 25–31% and 18–24%, and obese above 32% and 25% — and any percentage from a calculator is a screening estimate to discuss with a healthcare professional, not a diagnosis.
The ACE category bands, and what they describe
The most widely cited consumer reference for body fat percentage is the American Council on Exercise's category table. For women the published bands are essential fat 10–13%, athletes 14–20%, fitness 21–24%, average 25–31%, and obese at 32% and above. For men they are essential fat 2–5%, athletes 6–13%, fitness 14–17%, average 18–24%, and obese at 25% and above. This calculator applies exactly those bands to every estimate it produces, so a man screening at 17.5% is labeled Fitness and a woman screening at 28.6% is labeled Average.
Notice what the table is and is not. It is a descriptive classification of where adults tend to fall, drawn from fitness industry observation — it is not a clinical risk threshold, and "obese" in this table is a band label, not a medical diagnosis. The roughly ten-point offset between the sexes is biology, not a double standard: women carry more essential fat in breast tissue, hips, and thighs as a requirement of reproductive physiology, so a woman at 24% and a man at 14% sit at comparable positions within their respective tables.
The band edges in this calculator follow the published table exactly, which produces sharp transitions: the engine classifies a man at 24.9% as Average and the same man at 25.0% as Obese. Nothing biological changes across that tenth of a point — band boundaries are reading aids, not physiological lines.
Essential fat is a floor, not a goal
The lowest band deserves its name. Essential fat — 2–5% for men, 10–13% for women — is the minimum needed for normal physiological function: nerve insulation, hormone production, vitamin transport, and organ protection. Bodybuilders at contest condition occasionally dip near these floors for days, under supervision, and the consequences of staying there are well documented: hormonal disruption, impaired immunity, and, in women, loss of menstrual function.
This is the band where the calculator's framing matters most. A screening estimate near the essential-fat floor is far more likely to be a measurement artifact than a true reading — the Navy circumference method carries an error band of roughly ±3–4 percentage points, and the engine clamps results to a 2–75% range precisely because tape errors produce impossible numbers. Anyone genuinely pursuing very low body fat levels should be doing so with a healthcare professional involved, not a tape measure alone.
Two methods, two answers — why the same person lands in different bands
Run both of this site's methods on the same person and the bands can disagree. A 70-inch, 170-pound man aged 30 screens at 20.0% by the Deurenberg BMI-based equation (his BMI computes to 24.4) — the Average band. The same man with a 15-inch neck and 34-inch waist screens at 17.5% by the Navy tape method — the Fitness band. Neither is wrong; they are different proxies. The BMI estimate sees only total weight for height, while the tape method responds to where the mass sits.
Age widens the gap further, because the Deurenberg equation adds 0.23 percentage points per year of age. The same 170-pound man at age 55 screens at 25.7% — which the ACE table labels Obese — without his weight changing at all. That is not a verdict on 55-year-olds; it reflects the population-level observation that body fat tends to rise with age at a given BMI. For a 65-inch, 140-pound woman the equation returns 29.5% at age 30 and 35.2% at 55. When two screening methods disagree by a whole band, the correct conclusion is that band placement is approximate, not that one number is the truth.
Healthy is a range plus context, not a number
The honest answer to "what should my body fat be?" is a range conditioned on sex, age, genetics, and goals. For most non-athlete adults, the fitness and average bands — roughly 14–24% for men and 21–31% for women in the ACE table — describe where the large majority of healthy people sit. Performance athletes often sit lower in season; many healthy adults sit at the top of the average band for decades. Body fat percentage also says nothing about where fat is stored, yet fat distribution — particularly abdominal fat — carries most of the metabolic risk signal, which is why clinicians look at waist circumference and blood markers rather than a single percentage.
